HOYLAKE, England – Rickie Fowler is in the final group on Sunday for the second consecutive major. Similar to the U.S. Open last month, Fowler trails the tournament leader by a large margin.
Fowler was behind Martin Kaymer by five shots heading into the final round at Pinehurst. On Sunday at the British Open, he’ll be looking at Rory McIlroy, who is six shots ahead.
Still, Fowler is the only player this year to finish in the top 5 of the season’s first two major championships. A solid round on Sunday at Royal Liverpool and he’ll extend that streak to three.
“I definitely enjoyed the week at Pinehurst,” Fowler said, “with it being my best finish in a major, by far the most comfortable I’d ever felt in a major.

“Now, tomorrow, if I can go out and learn from what I did there at the U.S. Open and try and get off to a bit of a better start, maybe I’m able to put a bit of pressure on Rory, and maybe we can get into a fun little match come the back 9.”
Before the U.S. Open, Fowler had a chance to win the Masters. He shot a third-round 67 to enter the final round only two shots off the lead. Fowler was in the hunt for a while but bogeys on 11 and 12 sent him down the leaderboard and into a tie for fifth place after a 73.
The U.S. Open was similar in that Fowler shot 67 in the third round, before making double bogey on the fourth hole of the final round. He was never able to put any pressure on Kaymer, who was never in jeopardy of being caught.
During the third round here Saturday, Fowler was actually tied for the lead at 12 under par, but he dropped two shots on the final five holes, and McIlroy made eagles at Nos. 16 and 18 to end the day ahead by six.
