Rory agrees with Tiger that he needs consistency

AKRON, Ohio – Despite winning three legs of the career grand slam by the age of 25, Rory McIlroy believes there’s one area of his game that still needs improvement.

He wants to become more consistent.

“I mean, everyone’s going to have bad weeks,” he explained Tuesday. “It’s inevitable. It’s going to happen. We’re not machines or robots. We’re human beings, and it’s just hard to keep that level up for an extended amount of time.

“I think that’s just the thing that I’d like to do a little bit more of, make my bad weeks a little better. So instead of a missed cut, at least grind it out and try and finish in the top ten or whatever it is.”

Those comments were in response to a question based on Tiger Woods’ recent assessment of McIlroy’s game.

“The way he plays is pretty aggressively,” Woods said while McIlroy was in the midst of winning The Open Championship two weeks ago. “When he gets it going, he gets it going. When it gets going bad, it gets going real bad. It’s one or the other.”

For his part, McIlroy didn’t disagree with that critique.

Everyone goes through their ups and downs,” he said. “There’s plenty of players that would like to be as inconsistent as me. I’m not afraid of my inconsistencies. It’s something that I actually quite welcome, and I know that my good is very good and my bad can sometimes be very bad.”

Rory on claret jug: 'Nice to have it in my possession'

AKRON, Ohio – The claret jug will be touring Middle America the next two weeks, courtesy of Rory McIlroy.

After celebrating with the trophy amongst friends and family in both Northern Ireland and South Florida, the recent Open Championship winner has it with him for this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and will also bring it to the PGA Championship next week.

“Yeah, I’ve got it with me,” he said. “I’ll have it with me for the next couple of weeks. I’m probably going to head back home for a few days after the PGA. So it will stay there for a while.”

Since winning it just nine days ago, McIlroy has both partied with the famous hardware and spent some quiet moments alone with it.

“I took it out Monday night in Belfast with all of my buddies. We had a good time with it. Apart from that, I’ve sort of been taking pictures of it sort of beside the TV and on top of the toilet and wherever it’s been. I’ve been taking a few photos. It’s been quite funny, sending them around to all my friends. It’s definitely nice to have it in my possession.”

While he’s shared the claret jug with people he knows, McIlroy has been careful not to make it too public.

On Tuesday morning, he was swapping trophy stories with 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley.

“Keegan was sharing a story with me today, whenever he won the PGA, he went to a bar near where we live in Palm Beach Gardens, and he said he was letting everyone in the bar drink out of it. And I was like, ‘I know the people who hang out there. I wouldn’t let them drink out of that.’”

Barring WDs, PGA set to host all top-100 players

Barring any late withdrawals, next week’s PGA Championship will feature all of the top 100 in the Official World Ranking for the first time in major history.

The PGA annually boasts the most top-100 players of any major. The 156-player field also includes 20 club pros, who earned their spot at Valhalla by virtue of their finish at the PGA Professional National Championship.

The final two spots in the field will be filled based on what happens at this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and Barracuda Championship.

The year’s final major traditionally groups the winners of the Masters (Bubba Watson), U.S. Open (Martin Kaymer) and British Open (Rory McIlroy) during the first two rounds.
