DUBLIN, Ohio – Even after his come-from-behind victory last week at the PGA BMW Championship, Rory McIlroy was questioned about his split with Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday at the Memorial.
The Times of London reported that McIlroy called off his engagement in a three-minute phone conversation. McIlroy would not respond to those comments in a news conference at Muirfield Village but was asked a second question as to why he made his break up public.
“Honestly, I don’t know. It’s one of those things that it was a very public relationship,” he said. “I thought it was best instead of letting it linger and rumors, just to have it right there as soon as possible.”
McIlroy’s victory last week in the European Tour’s flagship event was his first this year and his first on European soil, giving him confidence heading into the U.S. Open in two weeks.
“I knew my game was good enough to get into contention,” he said. “I didn’t really do that in Houston, the Masters, Quail Hollow (Wells Fargo Championship), TPC (The Players). I finished the tournaments well, but never really had a chance to win, and then the first time I did have a chance to win last week, I’m able to close it off.”
