McGinley named Euro Tour Golfer of the Month

The European Tour’s Golfer of the Month for September didn’t hit a shot last month.

Members of the Association of Golf Writers and television and radio commentators voted Paul McGinley as the Golfer of the Month, despite the fact that McGinley didn’t, you know, play golf in September.

As always, McGinley was humble and gracious in accepting the award, saying, “I feel there are 12 winners of the Golfer of the Month Award rather than me, but I’m delighted to accept this award on behalf of those 12 players who represented Europe so magnificently in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.”

Though not quite as criminal as fans voting Rickie Fowler (no wins) over Rory McIlroy (two wins, including a major) for PGA Tour Player of the Month for August, this award still seems a bit excessive, no?

There was no shortage of worthy candidates: Justin Rose went 3-0-2 at Gleneagles, Graeme McDowell was undefeated (3-0), Jamie Donaldson delivered the clinching point for the Europeans and Paul Casey returned to the winner’s circle. Not good enough.

Wrote a breathless panel member, “McGinley got his deserved reward (a Ryder Cup victory) for an 18-month stint where he performed the role with admirable diligence and immense patience and craft.”

Wonder what his American counterpart won?
