HOYLAKE, England – Graeme McDowell called himself a one-hit wonder and didn’t even realize it.
On Tuesday at Royal Liverpool, McDowell was asked what it would mean to add the British Open to his U.S. Open. He said: “I feel like I’m ready to kick on to the next sort of chapter in my career now, and compete and win more major championships. I certainly won’t want to be a one-hit wonder.”
Several minutes later a reporter asked McDowell if he really considered himself as such, and asked him if he would do so forever if he failed to win another major.
“Not really sure where I pulled that one from,” McDowell quipped. “No, I’m not really sure. I’m going to sit back and view myself in 10, 15 years … when I decide that I don’t want to hole 6-footers for a living anymore.
“As long as I can give my career a hundred percent the next 10 years, I’m not going to view my career as anything but a success.”

McDowell has knocked on the door of a second major championship, especially at the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club (T-2, one shot behind Webb Simpson) and again that same year at the British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, where he tied for fifth place but was in contention before a final-round 75. McDowell, who won the European Tour’s French Open two weeks ago, says that he likens this Royal Liverpool track to Lytham, a place he considers his favorite on the Open rota. He hopes the similarities allow him to be in contention on Sunday.
“I feel like I’m more ready than I’ve ever been to win another major,” he said.
