There is some confusion as to when golf was first played at Fintona, with some claiming it started in 1896 there is no evidence to prove this. The early records only go back to 1939, and it would appear, that a former Secretary, used the early records to fuel the burning of rubbish in his backyard.
An account in Irish Life on 4th September 1914, clarifies some of the early history. The club was private-owned, by C. W. L. Brown-Lecky, who presented the earliest challenge cup, in 1913. The course is of nine-holes, was open all-year-round, and had been laid out ten years before, “under the supervision of Mr. Taylor”. The GUI, give an affiliation date of 1926, for the club.
