GLENEAGLES, Scotland – Graeme McDowell couldn’t be with his wife on their anniversary Sunday, but he gave her a nice gift from afar.
As the leadoff man for Europe, McDowell came from behind Sunday to defeat American Jordan Spieth, 2 and 1, in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. It was McDowell’s first wedding anniversary. His wife, Kristin, gave birth to their first child, Val Esme, last month.
McDowell said he was inspired thinking about his wife back home with their daughter in Orlando when he fell 3 down to Spieth through five holes.
“I thought that would be letting my wife down,” McDowell said.

McDowell completed every assignment European captain Paul McGinley gave him this week. He was Paul McGinley’s man to steer the talented but enigmatic Victor Dubuisson in foursomes, with the duo winning both their matches together. McDowell was 3-0 for the week.
“The captain put a big role on me this morning, and I’m happy I could deliver,” McDowell said.
Spieth led McDowell 3 up going to the back nine.
“I just felt something inside me start to turn around,” McDowell said. “I was proud of myself coming down that back nine. Jordan made some mistakes. He’ll be disappointed.”
McDowell clinched Europe’s 2010 Ryder Cup victory in Wales, defeating Hunter Mahan in the anchor singles match.
